About Matt Fawkes

Two mediums, one enquiry

I work in two mediums that keep questioning each other. Letterpress and giclée prints compress the world into bold, circulating signs; oil paintings, made from life, hold the single unrepeatable encounter. What is gained and lost in the space between them is my subject.

The practice is rooted in a place long shaped by making and industry, and in a background in design — years spent watching how the register a work enters the world through decides what it is worth.
